In 1956, Continental Car Combine in
New York City decided on importing a Communist car into
the United States during the Cold War with the U.S.S.R.
That did not make sense to most anyone but it actually
worked. Skoda 440s and 1200 were renamed Octavia and
Felicia. Although they were sold in the USA through
1967, sales were low compared to their sales in other
parts of the world.
I would like to introduce our readers to a car with
a history going back to 1859 (or 1869) when Emil Skoda
began manufacturing weapons in Plzen, Czechoslovakia.
No two early histories of the early automobile manufacturing
are the same and there is the claim that they built
Hispano-Suizas, chassis and bodies in 1923. Skoda acquired
Laurin & Klement, a bicycle and later motorcycle
manufacturer, and together they built the following
cars beginning in 1905.

Skoda automobiles are still produced today and are
sold in many parts of the world through their new owner,
the Volkswagon Group. Both the Octavia and Felicia names
have been retained.
