India was one of the most significant
markets for the Rolls-Royce Motor Car Company. The first
Rolls came to India around 1907. By 1947 (which was
when India gained independence from the British Empire),
over 900 Rolls-Royce cars had made it to Indian shores.
Most of these cars were custom-built to the specifications
of their owners, and coachbuilders went to great lengths
to please their Indian customers. The designs often
reflected the whims and eccentricities of the rich owners.
These cars form a spectacular representation of the
bygone princely era in India.
India's wealth was not confined to the Maharajahs alone.
Many a wealthy trader indulged himself in ordering these
spectacular machines and the larger states saw the Rolls-Royce
flock to the garages of families other than royalty.
You must have seen thousands of vintage Rolls-Royce
pictures. But very rarely would you have come across
expressions such as the following extravagant...
even outlandish...
What you see
on this page is just a glimpse of the early Rolls-Royce
in India. Team-BHP
members have put together a unrivalled source of information
(and little-known facts) on this marque's history in
India. - Ed.
