Every time there are significant changes
in automotive design or engineering, the old car hobby
grows several notches in stature. This is about to happen
again.
Background
The Depression of the 1930s saw hand built models rapidly
replaced by mass production cars. Coachbuilt cars just
sat in the showrooms -- the Brass Era cars disappeared
from the roads. Missed by auto enthusiasts who had memories
of the good times spent with those cars, it was only
a matter of natural progression that the old car hobby
came into being...
After World War II, the hobby once again got a shot
of adrenalin as streamlined cars began to appear that
were strikingly different from the boxy ones that preceded
them. Collectors meanwhile sought those classic coachbuilt
cars and outdated antiques. Evolution was at work again
as cars sprouted fins, developed chrome adornment and
grew powerful engines. Such cars were the norm on the
roads during the 1950s and 1960s, but by the 1970s and
1980s high priced gasoline, plastic parts, pollution
controls and safety features like rubber bumper were
enough to send collectors saving the now much coveted
1950-60s era cars. The 1990s brought rapidly developing
technology on to the scene and provided fresh styling
and improved performance.
And now...
Today we are watching the "green car" unfold
before our eyes. Hybrids, electrics and mini cars may
be collectible in the future but right now it is time
to gather up literature on the cars of the past before
it gets expensive.
The literature on the desirable cars of the 1990s-to-the-present
is available and affordable, but it will not be for
long. Combine fine cars with desirable literature and
you get a good investment.
