Quality Control

Most collectors prefer the literature they acquire to be in very good condition. Some demand it. Few sources are consistent in their quality. Swapmeets and eBay are notorious for wide swings in condition. Literature from a dealer is more consistent, but most dealers buy from swapmeets and sell on eBay and by phone/e-mail. The exception is McLellan's Automotive History (MAH) where, for 49 years, quality control has been a major selling point. All literature is in excellent condition, and the rare exceptions that are flawed have their problems noted in the descriptions.

Most literature dealers/vendors want to sell everything they acquire so they do not put much effort into examining their merchandise. Surprisingly, many customers put up with this while others learn to shop elsewhere. This is not poor customer service. It is fraud! It should not be tolerated and does not have to be.

In nearly five decades MAH has grown to be the largest, oldest and most successful auto literature business in the world. One of the many reasons is Quality Control.

All collections are purchased from private collectors who understand and confirm that their collection meets the necessary high standards. If it was stored in a basement and "smells funny" they must admit it!

Upon arrival the literature is sorted and each item is examined for damage and pages are counted. All items must be in excellent condition. If it has minor problems, but is a rare and desirable piece, the flaw is noted.

Those items meeting these requirements then go to the processor who examines it a second time while cataloging it for inventory, submits it to the photographer and has the programmer place it on the web site.

When the customer places their order for a brochure, book, dealer album, manual, etc., the packer will again review each item for quality and verify the correctness of the order.

 
Overkill? Why would anyone go to this much work?

MAH depends on repeat business. Each satisfied customer has the potential for making additional purchases and for referring their friends. One error can bring that relationship to an end.

Good literature can command a good price while flawed literature cannot.

::

Most collectors expect consistently nice literature and MAH caters to those collectors.

While most literature dealers must sell all of the literature they purchase, MAH has a ready market of swapmeet vendors, eBay sellers and other dealers for their rejected items.

MAH's reputation is its greatest asset for new customers. Another dealer once wrote that his literature was "McLellan quality". What a nice compliment but that sent all his customers to MAH.

 

All this ought to be common sense, but few dealers have picked up on the fact that quality control leads to success. It must be a company secret.
