Parents loved them and teenagers hated
them especially if they had just received their
drivers license and were handed the keys to the family
station wagon. Nothing could be more embarrassing than
picking up your friends in "that thing". It
did not happen to me, but it did to my younger brother
after I had left the "nest". Not fond of my
parent's "white elephant" Plymouth Suburban,
he asked them if he could get it repainted at his expense.
A color was agreed on, but when he returned home they
were shocked to see their car painted bright orange!
Somehow he got away with it.

By not having endured the experience
of my brother, I was more open to the usefulness of
station wagons when I discovered that my sporty Datsun
was too small. The great deals in literature and parts
at swapmeets that would not fit in the trunk and back
seat sent me to the Chevrolet dealer for a full size
station wagon. Later I added a trailer hitch and rear
air shocks. With an air mattress in the back I could
even sleep overnight at a swapmeet or on a camping trip.
After 11 years of service I did what most station wagon
owners did traded it in on the modern equivalent,
a minivan.
For all of you who grew up with station wagons as a
kid, or as parents, or as someone who used them as work
horses, we present the second most popular body style
of the 1940s through the 1970s the station wagon.
