If car names like Kissel, Mitchell,
Haynes and Moon puzzle you, I am not surprised. I was
not old enough to see these cars used as daily transportation
when I was a kid, but they were collectible cars in
the 1940s and 1950s. Brochures were available on these
makes in odd places because swapmeet and literature
dealers were few and far between. Usually they were
found in antique shops or secondhand stores, along with
a variety of other old miscellaneous paper goods ranging
from baseball cards to stamps, books and manuals. You
might have to rummage through boxes of old photographs,
sewing machine manuals, Sears catalogs and parts books.
Most everything was 30 to 50 years old. Sometimes much
older. I remember buying a box full of Confederate paper
money which I think I gave $1.00 for. (No, I don't still
have it.) Occasionally, old car brochures were found.
Once in awhile we still uncover 100 year old literature.
Not long ago we received a call from a Texas museum
that, in itself, was over 100 years old and they had
a storage room of literature that had not been cataloged.
They went through it and drew the conclusion that their
time would be better spent doing something else. For
a contribution to the museum it was ours.
We have just begun to inventory this literature and
among the brochures were some impressively old catalogs
that you might find interesting. Note the overall good
condition proving that 100 year old literature can be
found in good condition.
