Paint, Upholstery, Data & More
By Sharon K. McLellan

If you do not have an original dealer album to go with your car or with your collection of literature on a specific make/model of car your information is not complete. Though dealer albums are not inexpensive, they are worth every penny you pay because of the vast amount of information and number of illustrations that they contain.

Albums will vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. For example, some dealer albums come in two part sets; some will have transparencies, other will not; and some will be more deluxe than others. Let's take a moment to examine everything that a typical dealer album may contain:

Paint Chips - Actual samples of paint colors that were available are applied to plastic. Small paint chips will be glued to a heavy sheet of paper and larger chips will be held together in the notebook by either a spiral or looseleaf binding.

Transparencies - Clear plastic overlay sheets, with drawings of models / body styles which can be laid over paint chips (in some cases including two-tone combinations) to show what the car would look like in the color(s) you choose.

Paint Striping - A clear sheet of plastic will have lines of paint which can be overlayed on paint chips to show how striping would look on a car.

Fabric Samples - Actual samples of the cloth, vinyl and leather materials which were used for seats, dashboard and interior roof of a car. Small samples will be glued to a heavy sheet of paper and larger samples will be bound together in the notebook. Charts will be included indicating recommended color combinations.

Vinyl Roof, Convertible Top and Carpet Samples - Actual samples of the materials which were used for vinyl roof, convertible top or carpet for a car. Small samples will be glued to a heavy sheet of paper.

Photographs, Photo Renderings or Drawings: Exterior - At least one photograph or photo rendering of each model, with drawings showing additional body styles in a series.

Photographs, Photo Renderings or Drawings: Interior - At least one photograph, photo rendering or drawing of the types of seats that were available (i.e. bucket, bench, etc.) are shown in one or more colors in the section with fabric samples.

Photographs, Photo Renderings or Drawings: Accessories - At least one photograph, photo rendering or drawing of options and accessories, with charts listing which models each was available on.

We grade dealer albums by the following criteria:

A = Excellent condition. Shows little or no use.
B = Item shows normal wear, as used by a dealership for one year. No damage.
C = Well used, with some damage, but book is useable as a reference.

Prices range from $100 to $1,755 (1932 Cadillac) on albums that are in "A" condition.
