Connoisseurs' Choice
By Robert McLellan

It is hard not to notice the recent record prices being paid for great art works such as paintings, sculpture and classic cars. The resurgence of interest in expensive, rare and prestigious collectibles usually occurs when inflation is expected. As an auto enthusiast, all you have to do is follow the trends at the Barrett-Jackson, Christies, Coys and Kruse auctions. It is an impressive wake-up call to collectors who are also investors.

After a rapid rise in values in the 1970s and 1980s, prices peaked in the early 1990s, only to flatten out for the rest of the 1990s during the run-up in stock market prices. Stocks absorbed much of the investment money available. Now, after a few years of lackluster performance on Wall Street, prices of expensive treasures are once again being pushed up by investors eager to take advantage of today's good values which provide so much future potential. This is how the rich get richer.

Literature investors are not your average literature collector, buying lots of inexpensive 1960s GM, Ford and Chrysler Corporation catalogs. While these are good investments, what these connoisseurs want are the real gems — great investments that will yield the biggest profits. They want what the other top collectors want — brochures that are so desirable that, when it comes time to sell, there will be many buyers fighting over what they have.

What do they collect? Here are a few examples:
